Mobile security apps

Mobile defense offers anti-virus and malware protection, but it also allows you to remotely wipe any sensitive data on your phone. This is great if you have a company phone with sensitive contacts that you don’t want getting into the wrong hands. Remote access is also supported, so that GPS can be remotely activated and the location of your phone will show up on Google Maps. If you choose, your contact data can then be displayed so if an honest person finds it, they can return it to you.

SmrtGuard Mobile is an mobile security app, that offers many of the same features as Lookout, including the ability to remotely find your phone. In addition to the anti-virus and malware protection, you also receive SIM Gordian protection, which keeps any SIM cards but yours from being used in the device, rendering it useless to anyone but yourself. Call blocking is also included, so if you’re constantly getting calls from people who you don’t want to speak with, then you can block the calls from being received on the fly.

Lookout is currently the best security solution on Android for a number of reasons. Once installed, it actively scans all of your applications to determine whether or not they are safe based on a databse that is updated daily. From there, once you install any new applications, they are scanned against the same database. If malware is detected, you are instantly alerted and the application is not installed.

While this is all typical security for Android cellphones, the thing that sets Lookout apart is the ability to track your phone if it is stolen. Once installed, remote access of GPS and periodic pictures can be taken with the camera to help you instantly find your phone. Lookout also offers the only way to find your phone after it’s already been lost or stolen through their Plan B application that can be remotely installed via the market.
